What's In A Name

In Houston TX, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) just renamed eight of their schools that had been named for people associated with the Confederate cause.

As the Houston Chronicle story notes, most of the names are changed to neighborhoods, local educators & local leaders.  What is interesting & amusing is that in one case, Lanier Middle School named after Sidney Lanier , HISD changed the name to Bob Lanier, a former mayor of Houston.

This is brilliant.  I'm disappointed that the HISD board didn't follow the same plan for all the schools:  replaceing the old names of Confederates with new names.

Johnston Middle school named for General Albert Sidney Johnston
could be renamed for General Washington Johnston
who kept slavery out of the new state of Indiana.

Jackson Middle School named for Stonewall Jackson
could be renamed Michael Jackson Middle School.

Reagan High School named for John H. Reagan
could be renamed Ronald Reagan or Nancy Reagan High School.

Dowling High School named for Dick Dowling
could be renamed Jonathan Dowling High School.

Davis High School named for Jefferson Davis
could be renamed for Miles Davis.

Grady Middle School named for Henry Grady a promoter of the New Jim Crow South
could be renamed for John Grady.
